A new poll by Reuters shows that most Americans are largely ignorant to the purpose of the Federal Reserve, yet they believe the government should allow the Central Bank to run itself. A poll of 1,388 Americans found that more than 75 percent of Americans believe the Federal Reserve should be left to its own devices rather than giving Congress detailed oversight. The numbers also show that 54 percent of Americans do not know who the Fed Chair is, and 48 percent admitting they know very little about the private bank. The poll comes as the Senate Banking Committee holds a hearing on Tuesday discussing a possible audit of the bank.
