Protesters with the Blockupy alliance battled with riot police early Wednesday in Frankfurt, Germany at the opening of a new headquarters for the European Central Bank. An estimated seven thousand people rallied and fought with the police, who threw tear gas and fired a water cannon. Around 550 protesters were detained, 94 police officers were injured by stones, and seven police cars were set on fire. The protesters came from France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark, Italy, Spain, Portugal, and several other countries, to show their solidarity with Greece and call for an end to austerity.
