According to the U.S. government’s Federal Business Opportunities website, the U.S. State Department has canceled its $1 billion surveillance drone competition contract, claiming none of the proposals met its requirements. The competition contract would allow companies to operate small-scale unmanned aircraft that would offer real-time video of convoy routes and buildings. Companies like Aerovironment and Vanguard Defense Industries LLC would have been able to boost drone sales outside the Department of Defense, the U.S. biggest drone purchaser. The State Department plans to revise their attempts and release a new request for drone proposals.
